What is Onekoshima?
This site is a homage to and collection of the various types of the ‘Oneko’ cursor-chasing
virtual cat created in 2022 by adryd, as a fun and hacky script to bring joy and
whimsy to the cat and animal lovers of the net. When you arrive on the shore of the
virtual island of cute pixel cats, you will find a treasure trove of Oneko spritesheets,
information and resources devoted to this tiny tabby, as well as more information on
feline screenmates of today and yesteryear, such as Webneko and the original Nekos of
the Eighties and Nineties. All information and spritesheets have been carefully
collected and curated by Vijay Shah, a oneko fan from England, UK – the Mayor of
Onekoshima.
The Story Behind Onekoshima
Since I first encountered Oneko some time in 2023, I have developed a keen interest in
these tiny desktop kitties and decided to add one to a site I own, Vijay’s Virtual Vibes.
I began collecting increasingly onekos from other sites and GitHub repositories and
created a version of the original oneko.js code that can not only work with more than
one oneko but randomise them. I then incorporated the oneko collection and this
kitted-up code into my site and have been adding more to the collection ever since.
Now I’ve brought these little ones to a new home – the island of Onekoshima, otherwise
known as the Virtual Cat Island, a bit like its real-life counterparts in Japan, such as the
famed Aoshima. My vision for ‘Onekoshima’ is to expand on the collection of onekos I
find and make them available to all, as well as bringing more resources on Onekos and
their counterparts and forebears.
BTW, in case you're wondering what 'Onekoshima' means, in Japanese it translates to
the 'island of Oneko (cats)'
